Backpacker Magazine – October 2004

High Points: Mt. Magazine, Arkansas

Hit the high point and move on to the other attractions this park offers.

by: Shannon Davis and Joe Glickman

Elevation: 2,753 feet

Summit

Rock jocks, hang gliders, and butterfly fanatics flock to 2,200-acre Mt. Magazine Mountain State Park, but not to visit the uninspiring high point. Tag the top, then head down the half-mile trail to Cameron Bluff Overlook. There, striated 200-foot sandstone cliffs sit like petrified layer cakes 2,000 feet above the Arkansas River Valley and distant Boston Mountains.
