Before You Snowshoe

Follow these tips when you embark on your next snowshoeing journey.

by: BACKPACKER Editors

  1. Call the area you are planning to visit to find the areas in which snowshoeing is allowed and what areas are recommended for use according to current snow conditions. Different trails may be suggested, depending on the weather and the amount of snowfall the area has seen.

  2. It is always best to have a current topographic map of the area you are planning to visit.

  3. If you are snowshoeing on private land, make sure you have the owner's permission.

  4. Don't snowshoe on trails that have cross-country ski tracks because you will ruin the trails for skiers. Instead, snowshoe adjacent to the ski trail.
