Reader Tip: In The Wick Of Time

Follow this BACKPACKER reader's tip to get the most out of your candles on the trail.

by: BACKPACKER Editors

Reader Laurie Braaten of Weymouth, Massachusetts, saves weight every way he can when thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail. To get the most out of each tea light (the inch-tall candles in aluminum containers), he carries a spare piece of candle wick (sold at craft stores). The wick also allows him to replenish his candle from leftover wax found in trail shelters.
