Backpacker Magazine – November 2008
Check out BACKPACKER's picks for the 10 Most Dangerous Hikes in the U.S.
The Answer: Massachusetts's Freetown-Fall River State Forest. Dayhikers have spotted UFOs and ghosts, and police have found evidence of satanic cult practices. Hockomock Swamp, named by Native Americans, means "place where the spirits dwell." This place has been creepy for a long time.
The Way: Hike along a 10-mile out-and-back, starting at the pavillion 12 miles north of New Bedford. Head south on Bent Rim Trail for one mile and turn left onto Makepeace Road, which snakes around the Hochomock. Take Grinnell Path to Whitetail Loop and The Ledge, a favorite spot for suicides (seriously). mass.gov/dcr/parks/southeast/free.htm
