Everest looms on the left, beyond closer, 25,750-foot Nuptse. (Hage)
Get the finest vista of the world’s tallest peak from this 18,500-foot hill near Everest Basecamp. It’s a popular spot, but avoid crowds by targeting shoulder seasons (early September, early December, or March) and doing the two-hour hike from Gorak Shep for sunset instead of sunrise (the light’s better anyway).
Skip organized tours, eat simply, and walk in from Jiri, and you could pay less than $450/person for 24 days. (Or fly to Lukla, hire a porter/guide, eat better, and pay around $1,000/person for two weeks.)
