Eaton Canyon, nestled at the edge of the Angeles National Forest and the San Gabriel Mountains, is nothing short of picturesque.  Visitors can hike out to a 44-foot waterfall and small wading pool, and in recent years, it has become a popular destination in the area.

That lovely view can be deadly, however.  The U.S. Forest Service announced Thursday that it is closing the dangerous upper portion of the canyon to hikers this summer.  CBS Los Angeles reports that five people have died in the Upper Falls since 2011, and park rangers performed over 60 rescues there in 2012 alone.  The falls are notoriously popular with cliff jumpers.

Anyone violating the new restrictions may be fined up to $5,000 and face up to six months in jail.
