"Amazing Grace" was one of the original '46ers.'

A decade after her death, Grace Hudowalski finally has an Adirondack peak all to herself.

The Albany Times-Unionreports that East Dix, a 4,026-ft. peak in upstate New York, was officially renamed Grace Peak on Thursday in honor of Hudowalski, a beloved hiking mentor in the region.

Hudowalski, who died in 2004 at the age of 98, was one of the original ‘46ers,’ the nickname given to hikers who have summited all 46 mountains of New York’s 4,000-ft.-plus peaks. She is still affectionately known as “Amazing Grace” in the local hiking community, owing to her years of trail service and encouragement of outdoor pursuits.

Members of the Adirondack 46er hiking club had been petitioning state and local agencies to rename the mountain for over 12 years. With Thursday’s decision, newly christened Grace Peak will become the first Adirondack peak to be renamed in over 40 years.
