Guns in Our National Parks?
This week, Interior Secretary Dick Kempthorne announced plans to review laws banning guns in national parks and on land administered by the Fish and Wildlife Service. After the review, the department will draft new gun rules by April 30 for public comment. Several conservation groups and ranger associations have already spoken out against the review. Not surprisingly, the NRA supports the review and the accompanying senate bill, which sprung from a letter written to Kempthorne by Idaho Republican Senator Mike Crapo. Both Crapo and the NRA claim that the need for guns in national parks stems not from a desire to hunt, but from the necessity to protect oneself and family from both violent crime and vicious animals.
Your chances of encountering violent crime in our national parks is very small — about 1 in 708,333, according to park officials. I have owned a firearm for 22 years. I have had a CCW twice and currenly haver another. I have yet to shoot anyone or beast. I have no desire to get into a a beef with anyone or beast as with most gun owners. Why would I be willing to give up my home, job, and life to shoot and individual. When President Obama signed this into law via the finacial bill, there were individuals who said that there would be mass shootings in the national parks. I have yet to hear of one. This is due to the fact that those of us who carry firearms legaly respect human life and abide by the law. IF you are concern with illegal activity, you should look no further than that drug cartels who have chosen to gow their drugs in OUR NATIONAL FOREST.

While crime is low in the national park when looking at the statistics, it does happen. Take a look at the NPS morning report.

It gets even more personal if it happens to you or someone you know. We have seen hikers killed recently in GA and NC.
Those of us with CCW permits simply wish to be able to carry for our own protection. We are asking for the same right that is available in most national forests. I confine my hiking to national forest or other locations where I can carry. If and when I can carry in the national parks, I will look forward to visiting them.
