All Big Ditch trips serve up life-list scenery. Heck, you just have to walk to the edge for that. But treks that come with scenery and solitude are usually really hard, really remote, or both. Not this one. The 42-mile, five- to six-day out-and-back off the South Rim has a rare combo of easy access and the chance to explore a gaping side canyon that few hikers ever see. Bonus: Water is more plentiful on this route than many other Grand Canyon hikes, meaning lighter loads.
Descend the well-traveled South Kaibab Trail to Bright Angel Campground. Day two, crank out nine steep miles on the Clear Creek Trail to lonely Clear Creek, in a deep tributary canyon. Even on its most “crowded” nights during prime hiking season, the Clear Creek camping zone (AK 9) averages just 10 people spread across four dispersed sites. Stay two nights creekside and explore: Head down canyon to the Colorado River (six miles round-trip) or, better yet, hike Clear Creek’s northeast arm to Cheyava Falls (eight miles round-trip). The 800-foot cascade (best in spring or after a storm) shoots straight out of the Redwall layer on the canyon’s North Rim. Spend night four at Bright Angel Campground, then climb the Bright Angel Trail—more shaded than the South Kaibab—to the South Rim; or break up the ascent with a night at Indian Garden.
›› Magic Moment Eyeballing the big flat rocks on the rim of Zoroaster Canyon, at mile 5.5 on the Clear Creek Trail, you take a loooong lunch break and savor the view across Zoroaster toward the vast sweep of soaring buttresses and curving walls of Ottoman Amphitheater and Cape Royal.
›› Local Knowledge Look for bighorn sheep on the steep, one-mile stretch between Phantom Overlook and the Tonto Plateau.
›› Do It Free shuttle buses serve both trailheads. Map Trails Illustrated Grand Canyon #207 ($12; natgeomaps.com) Contact (928) 638-7888; nps.gov/grca

I would recommend getting this hike in immediately becsuse it has been my experience that whenever Backpacker publishes the route to a heretofore 'undiscovered route" it is immediately flooded with hundreds of backpackers with a copy of Backpacker magazines sticking out of their back pocket.

It's actually a 12 mile round trip hike to the Colorado River from the Clear Creek campsite. This is from the Grand Canyon National Park site. Also there is no water on the Clear Creek Trail from the North Kaibab to the campsite.

We did this hike over Easter weekend (4 nights, 5 days) 5 or 6 years ago. The falls were running huge at that time. and there were so many kinds of wildflowers blooming that I lost count and ran out of memory on three different cards trying to photograph them all. It is a spectacular hike, BUT permits are hard to come by and you must be in good shape. My husband and I were 52 and 57 at the time and doing a lot of hiking, skiing, etc.,

@ Natalie: Seems a bit much for an inexperienced hiker. If you are both fit and used to the elevation, the 7 mile/ day pace won't be a problem. I too have concerns about the recent snow and the overnight temperatures. I have reservations at Mather campground 3/30 & 3/31 and plan to do a series of day hikes at G.C. then off to Bryce for 3 days of back country hiking.

We just got back from the South Rim.WE got got lucky and landed three day permit going down South Kaibab to Bright Angel and back up via Bright Angel trail. Permits were hard to come by and there was ice first mile and half going down and coming up micro spikes or such highly recommended.Lastly do your homework for the trip get in shape and have some fun,not recommended for inexperienced hikers!

You should mention that permits are required and hard to get because this is quite a popular hike for those of us in the know in the southwest. Go to the Grand Canyon backcountry website for details. Not for inexperienced hikers. Cheyava Falls is best in the early spring and is dependent upon snow melt. Do not do this hike in the summer!!!

Clear Creek is hardly a "secret". Thanks Backpacker for exploiting it even more. You should mention that people are encouraged to use "wag bags" since very few backpackers understand the fundamentals of Leave No Trace Ethics. Let's see how many "backpackers" you can get in trouble this year!

Did the South Kaibab down, 2 nights at Phantom Ranch, Bright Angel up with 1 night at Indian Garden the last week of March 2011. There were still patches of ice on the South Kaibab on our decent. Stopping at Indian Garden on the way out for a night was a great choice. Watched the sunset and took a "leisurely" stroll out the following morning. Good luck and enjoy!

Hi Natalie,
My sister and I are planning on taking the South Kaibab from the South Rim to Phantom Ranch, and Bright Angel back to South Rim the following day, towards the end of March. From what I've read, the weather that time of year should be great for that type of trip. Sounds like it would be okay for camping out as well, as long as you are well prepared. If neither of you are experienced, I would suggest you either consider going with a guide, or plan on something a little more modest than a 5-6 day, 42 mile trip. Or, if you are really adventurous... speak to some who are experienced, read a bunch about this type of trip, and make sure you are really prepared, (just my 2 cents)

Hi, I'm wondering if I could get anyone's opinion about this hike at the end of March. Is that too early? Also, what was the difficulty level? It will just be my girlfriend and I and neither of us are that experienced.
Thanks!

A great hike--but beware the wind-tunnel effect at the Clear Creek camp. On an April trip, the wind popped two stakes so far that I never found them, and I spent most of the night holding the tent up with my feet. Another option: pack water for a dry camp just above the Creek on the Clear Creek trail; this will get you out of the wind tunnel.
