Backpacker Editor Dennis Lewon prefers solid design over shaving weight.
Dennis Lewon
My most memorable gear testing story: I decided to test a wood-burning stove on California’s Lost Coast in November. Bad idea. After a week of rain, wet wood, and very unimpressed campmates, I learned a lesson about time and place.
My "gear philosophy": Durability trumps weight. I like solid products that are built to last, and have simple designs and features.
My coolest backpacking trip: Wind Rivers in September. I go with a good buddy most years, it’s always great.
My dream adventure: I want to take my kids on a trek in India, in Himachal Pradesh.
