Create a base
Starting with moderate fitness, you'll need just a week to build a strong foundation. Do endurance and interval work on a soft surface, like grass or a dirt trail, or with low-impact sports like cycling. Older hikers: Substitute brisk walking for running on endurance days.

Week 1 used to be there just a week ago. I can't find it now either. I think the endurance called for 45-60 minutes, and the intervals called for approximately 30 seconds longer of rest. The long hike was the same distance, but only with half pack weight. I

Where are the workouts for week 1? This is a great idea to place in your magazine. What is the source of your information so I can read more?
I'm glad to see Backpacker doing stuff like this. Now how about a link to view the whole article on one page? Or a print link that takes us to a nice clean version of the whole thing. that won't waste ink on unnecessary ads or extra wide margins? Thanks.

What's wrong with using pe from 1-10 like everyone else. Then I wouldn't have to look it up. DUH!!
I'd like to know why I can never print anything off this website even if I click the "print this page". All I get is a blank page except for the ads and subscription promos, they always print up nicely
PE stands for Perceived Exertion. Click on the "How Hard Are You Working" link above to see an intensity scale.
What does PE mean? I understand everything else.
