Boots
These all-leather waterproof hikers proved trail-worthy from Colorado to the Swiss Alps, thanks to stiff midfoot support that can handle extended dayhiking with loads up to 25 pounds. The Capilene lining boosts comfort and wicks moisture. One complaint: The lugged sole stuck to most surfaces, but slipped on wet rock. Bonus: The Drifter is made in part from recycled materials. Best for medium- to high-volume feet. $130; men's 7-12, 13, 14, 15; women's 5-11, 12; 2 lbs. 7 oz. (men's 9); patagonia.com/footwear. Reader service #109

Bought a pair of these and took them on a 4 day trip to the smokies. Kept my feet dry despite some wet trails and shallow stream crossings. The toe box is a godsend on downhills. The stiff sole is more like a boot than a shoe. They grip well on lose and dry surfaces bit slip easily on wet roots and boulders. You really have to watch where you step. Overall, a decent option if you don't want a full boot.

Had mine for 2 years and wear them for work almost every day. They have had a hard life. Only problem slips on wet rocks. Trying to find another pair of black
