Boot Review: Asolo FSN 95

Given an Editors' Choice Award in 2001, this boot continues to be a great value.

by: The Backpacker Editors

It's been 3 years since we awarded this boot an Editors' Choice Award (under the name Fusion 95 GTX), and it's still one of the great values out there. Testers love the easy break-in uppers, which proved plenty supportive even during treacherous tidewater cobble hiking on California's Lost Coast. The light, stiff soles edge and grip well. Fit is good for a wide range of feet, thanks to a forgiving last.

Price: $155

Many customers reported reliability problem connected with the wear of the sole in FSN 95. However, my case is just shockingly bizarre - during the 1st day of the trekking in French Alps the sole of the left boot started to degrade in the heel area and next morning the whole sole totally collapsed. During the day the right boot also collapsed, so I had to descend almost barefoot in emergency conditions. I tried to address this problem (total physical degradation of the both soles within 2 days of trekking) to Asolo, but my detailed report (with attached quality photos of the problematic areas) was unanswered, which means that the customer support in the company is just absent!

I am shocked by the company inability to react as much as by the quality of the boots (the piece of extreme sport goods, which we expect to be extremely reliable, as we put our security and even life on the bet when we are in the mountains)

I went to buy a pair of Lowa boots, as I loved my last pair but after trying on both Lowa and Asolo, the Asolo fit more like a glove. To break them in, I worn them for 1 day, 3 days prior to a 6 mile hike in the high country in central Colorado, with a 60# pack. It rained most of the way in and had water running down the trail off and on, as well as a few water crossings and my feet stayed absolutely dry. It has great ankle support and traction. I highly recommend this boot.

I love these boots, but disagree with the easy break in. I had worn mine around town for months before the first week long backpacking trip in Panthertown Valley (NC). I didn't feel like they were really broken in until the end of the week. Now I LOVE them!

these are a superb pair of shoes, when my first one worn out after 5 yrs, i got just one more of the same type, when you find good gear you stick with it.
