The Perfect Circle: Hiking the Annapurna Circuit

Nepal's Annapurna Circuit can't compete with the world's best treks for lavish huts, extreme solitude, and sumptuous cuisine. So why is it still number one? Let us count the reasons.

Going off about how this is the sweetest trek in the world is like naming The Grateful Dead your new favorite band. What a discovery! Such bold taste!

Fact is, the Annapurna Circuit is so well-known it's as much cliché as trek. The 128-mile horseshoe-shaped route circles Nepal's heaven-high Annapurna range, and it's been hailed as the holy grail of trekking since it was first opened to foreigners in the early 1980s. Travel writers and hikers everywhere gush about the trail, even as others discover unknown life-listers elsewhere. There are treks that are more rugged or more remote, huts that are more luxe, pilgrimage sites that are more holy, wildlife that's more exotic, and even scenery–sacrilege!–that's more beautiful. Can another trail please step up and swipe Annapurna's crown?

Afraid not. After hiking the circuit myself last fall, with my wife Emily on our honeymoon, I must join the chorus of Annapurna groupies. It's simply the best. Here's why:

It Gets Better Every Day

For instant gratification, go to New Zealand. You'll be able to snap photos of the postcard-perfect mountains from the trailhead. But compared to such instant-access treks (the bon-bons of the hiking world), the Annapurna Circuit is a 12-course dinner.

It starts with jungle–a monkey-and-banana tree tangle that's a total shock even if you've been forewarned. Sweat pours off us like rain as we climb through terraced rice fields carved out of greenery. Two days later–where are the mountains?–we walk through a canyon so narrow and deep that direct sunshine only penetrates at noon. A day after that, we're in pines so tall and dense, I think of Oregon.

Finally–slowly–the high Himalaya emerges in sneak peeks and tantalizing vistas. And then the big magic: On our 10th day, as we approach 17,768-foot Thorung La, the highest point of the circuit, suddenly there's nothing but mountains. We're alone in a choppy sea of 20,000-foot peaks. Spindrift unfurls off four of the world's 10 highest summits, which loom on every horizon, their fluted walls reflecting the sun's rays so brightly that they burn ridgeline silhouettes into our retinas. When Annapurna III and Gangapurna come into view, I have the same feeling in my chest that I had the first time I peered into the Grand Canyon: a light, wide-eyed inhale of surprise. Sounds and smells fade; my vision sharpens. I can see every minute feature on those corrugated ice-and-rock walls. I'm just a pair of eyes, floating amid the peaks like a helium balloon.

Annapurna Sanctuary Trek or Annapurna base camp trek
Annapurna Base Camp is one of the best treks of Nepal as it is the combination of splendid natural scenery with the blend of cultures. We have had a fantastic two week trek to Everest base camp. Our Guide and porter. Sanjib and Pemba have been excellent and very attentive looking after us.Sanjib is a very good guide and taught us allot about Nepali culture. Pemba was a brilliant porter. We think he will make an excellent guide in future. The level of service from both Sanjib and Pemba was superb. They were available all the way to help us with anything we needed, and both were thoughtful about anything we might require, water, food showers, accommodation. Sanjib's knowledge of the area and the lodges meant that we were always happy with our accommodation. He took care to visit places which were comfortable and had home stay feel. Sanjib have the qualities to be excellent guide and porter and to give all his clients a wonderful trekking experience. We highly recommend him.

Ghorepani Poon Hill trek&tour

The Everest Base Camp are two base camps, each on opposite sides of Mount Everest. South Base Camp is in Nepal at an altitude of 5,364 metres (17,598 ft) (28°0′26″N 86°51′34″E), and North Base Camp is in Tibet at 5,150 metres (16,900 ft)[1][2][3] (28°8′29″N 86°51′5″E). These camps are rudimentary campsites on Mount Everest that are used by mountain climbers during their ascent and descent. South Base Camp is used when climbing via the southeast ridge, while North Base Camp is used when climbing via the northeast ridge.
Supplies are carried to the South Base Camp by sherpas or porters, and with help of animals, usually yaks. The North Base Camp has vehicle access at least in the summer months). Climbers typically rest at base camp for several days for acclimatization; to reduce the risks and severity of altitude sickness.

Ghorepani is a village in Myagdi District in the Dhawalagiri Zone of northern-central Nepal. It lies 17 kilometres from the district capital of Baglung at an elevation of approximately 2874m (9429ft). The village lies within the Annapurna Conservation Area (ACA) and contains a number of "guest houses" that provide lodging and meals to mountain trekkers, many of whom spend the night before a pre-dawn trek to the top of nearby Poon Hill (3210m/10531ft) to watch the sunrise.
The place used to be a rest stop where ancient traders found water (pani in Nepali) for their horses (ghora in Nepali) thus leading to the nomenclature Ghorepani.
Ghorepani lies on a major trail linking several other villages as well as the Annapurna Base Camp. From the South-East direction, it can normally be reached by foot from the village of Birethanti in about 10 hours depending on the trekker. However, many trekkers prefer to overnight at one of the lower villages on their way to Ghorepani, covering the distance over two days owing to the steepness of the trail, the increase in altitude and the beauty of the natural surroundings. From the North-West direction, Ghorepani can be reached in about 8 - 10 hours starting from Tatopani. This trail passes through the villages of Shikha, Dana and Chitre.

I highly recommend our guide Kabi for any adventures you undertaken in the mountains of Nepal.

We highly recommend him.

title: “a perfect trip…….not to be missed “
“This year at the end of february i went in Nepal for 18 days for the second time and i did a small trekking in the Annapurna region, I went to visit Pokhara, Kathmandu, Bakthapur and Nagarkot and I saw the National Park of Chitwan and in this trip I had the pleasure to meet Sanjib Adhikari.
He is an independent trekking guide and tour operator in Nepal and he has already obtained trekking guide license from the ministry of tourism, government of Nepal.
In his work Sanjib Adhikari is a person very responsible and serious, very helpful and attentive to his customers, he knows very well the mountain because he has many years of experience and is also an excellent guide for visiting the cities, the best thing for me is that he loves his country very much and loves his work and always manages to convey all his enthusiasm with simple ways and always with the smile.
Sanjib is also a very funny person and after this experience we became a very good friend
For these reasons I am very glad to report the site of Mr. Sanjib Adhikari

Annapurna Sanctuary Trek
Nov 14, 2012

Annapurna Sanctuary Trek

The trek into the area below the massive south face of Annapurna - known as the Annapurna Sanctuary - is one of the most popular treks in Nepal. The trek begins in Pokhara and leads up through the breathtaking Modi Khola gorge into the vast mountain ringed amphitheatre of the Sanctuary.

As we trek through bamboo and rhododendron forests we have superb views of the Annapurna range. We eventually pass between the mountains of Machhapuchhre and Hiunchuli which guard the entrance to the Sanctuary, and after 6 days reach our goal, the high glacial basin that is the site of the Annapurna south face base camp. This is a classic trek, which allows access to the high mountains of the Himalaya within a reasonable timeframe and with a maximum altitude of 4000m. Accommodation and food is provided in the local lodges. Transport to Pokhara is by private coach. This trek ends in Pokhara.

Itinerary:
Day 01: Fly/ drive Kathmandu to Pokhara.
Day 02:Drive to Nayapul,Trek to Tikhedhunga (1540)
Day 03: Trek to Ghorepani (2855m)
Day 04: Trek to Tadapani.(2590m)

Nepal Trekking Guides
Oct 12, 2012

Hi!

I went to Everest Base Camp and was going to Annapurna this past April/May. I can tell you that I found good prices in Kathmandu. I went shopping with my guide though and he seemed to get good deals. I think he rents-out sleeping bags. You can get them in Pokhara too, but you will find a bigger selection in Thamel. this means you can get better deals and will be able to talk them down on the price. It is a Nepali custom (I read in a guide) to bargain. It is fun. You will have no problems wih the weight on the plane. My bag was a bit big, I have a hard time traveling light.
I did hire a guide and he took care of hiring a porter. He works with trusted people. I can recommend my guide. He was knowledgeable, friendly, and most of all looked-out for my safety. He seemed to know just about everyone in Kathmandu and many, many guides and people on the mountain. Because Sanjib knows so many people he was constantly getting updates from up the mountain, or down the mountain. It was great to travel with a guide that has so many established relationships. I found him by chance through a travel forum and then got references from him. That is, I emailed past clients. In no time, I received emails from Italy, Germany and the U.S. singing this guy's praises, so that is how I went about finding my guide. I found the price very reasonable and I liked the fact that you do not pay until you get there, so you avoid the big down payments and the advance payments as well. I was happy to travel solo. Traveling in a group is great, but for sure, you will not get personalized attention. You can meet a lot of people at the tea houses, or as you go along the trek you will become familiar with others "going your way." You can contact Sanjib Adhikari at sanjib-adhikari@hotmail.com and Mobile No +97798416138. I recommend email. I am sure he will be happy to provide you with references. Let me know if you have more questions and enjoy!!!

I did the Annapurna circuit about a year ago during the spring. Great time to go! Although now they're building the road so I almost would recommend to not do this circuit anymore. We did it in 16 days (and added on another loop) but there was about a week where we were hiking on the road alongside trucks and other traffic. Soon this will just be a 4 day circuit we head.

I would recommend doing the Everest trek. There is an option to fly for the first part but my friend said that its worth hiking the whole thing and then you also get acclimated to the altitude.

Nepal is beautiful though! And I highly recommend hiking there!

I did the Annapurna circuit in the early 90s and it is so much fun. It was easily the most rewarding travel vacation I have ever had. You meet nice people along the route, both the Nepalese and your fellow trekkers from around the world. I am probably not the most experienced traveler that reads backpacker, but I am sure glad that I went on the number one hike!

A great trek: I went in Dec. 2005 when the civil war was full in swing. That, and because it was late in the season made it so there were not too many people(trekkers) there, but there were a few from the world over and it was a great even if a bit edgy because of the war . Yes, I did have to pay a bribe/travel fee to the guerillas, but I would have to say that they were congenial and not so near a nuisance as the Royalist Army that was pretty much everywhere except the more remote areas closer to the Tibetan Border. The Trek I did then was 166 miles around the circuit, and, yes, they were working on roads at that time(in a very primitive way). Going up to see the 87 year old Lhama living in a cliffside above Manang with a view of the town below and Tillicho Glacier, along with marinated Yak steaks with mushrooms and then a huge slice of Apple Pie afterwards is one memory I will never forget.
If you go late in the season as I did bring Ice Trekkers for your boots or something similar, for the pass. I used a zero degree bag (TNF Snowshoe-same bag as on the Inca Trail). It was "just enough" for the Zero Degree ambient temperature near the Thorung -La. I could write a lot more poignant, informative words here, but just be prepared for short stints in Jungle, Desert, Alpine and Arctic terrains(if late in the season) and spend as little time in Kathmandu as possible.

Sadly parts of the Annapurna circuit have now been converted to a road. There are efforts being made to develop a "new annapurna circuit" along the other side of the Kali Gandaki. However, it is expected that new areas like around Manaslu will become more popular once tea houses are built on that route.

Is there any way we can get a gear list with articles like this? We subscribe to backpacker and in thinking through trips and with an ever growing assortment of gear we always wonder, which sleeping bag do we take? -20, 0, 20, etc? A list of what you brought, what worked and didn't work would be awesome for this and all travel related articles.
