Walk the World's Highest Trail.
The Perfect Circle: Hiking the Annapurna Circuit | Chile's Torres del Paine Circuit | Corsica's GR 20 | Peru's Inca Trail to Machu Picchu | Italy's Alta Via 1 | New Zealand's Milford Track | England's Pennine Way | Tanzania's Mt. Kilimanjaro | Everest Base Camp, Tibet | Tour du Mont Blanc
Classic cred At 21,400 feet, Mt. Everest's Advanced Base Camp (ABC) on the mountain's northern side is the highest place on Earth you can hike to on established trails. Winding across the broad, barren Tibetan plateau, the trail starts in the village of Tingri and ends at the foot of Everest. This 44-mile, 10-day trek gains 7,000 vertical feet and accesses four of the Himalayas' mightiest mountains: Makalu, Cho Oyu, Lhotse, and Chomolungma (Everest's Tibetan name, meaning "Mother Goddess of the World"). You'll walk along the "serac highway," hugging the east side of the Rongbuk Glacier, where melting ice forms pinnacles that look like 100-foot-high swizzle sticks. And always, the mesmerizing north face lures you, until finally you're standing at ABC, so close to the world's tallest peak that it seems (alas, deceptively) like you could summit in hours.
Beta April, when Everest climbers flock to basecamp, offers a window of relatively stable weather. Fly from Kathmandu to Lhasa with your guides and jeep it as far as Tingri. Then trek up the Ra Chu Valley to the Rongbuk Monastery, a Buddhist temple dwarfed by views of Mt. Everest. The last push to ABC climbs just 656 feet over five miles–but takes five breathless hours.
Local's tip Tibetan Buddhists believe that the mantra om mani padme hum invites blessings from Chenrezig, the deity of compassion. Remember it: It'll come in handy when you're wheezing along at 20,000 feet.
Plan It International Mountain Guides has offered ABC treks since 1991 (mountainguides.com). Read The Other Side of Everest, by Matt Dickinson (Crown, $8) before you go, or bring it to trace different routes up the mountain while your dal bhat cooks.

We have just returned from trekking the everest region in Nepal. It was our first time traveling to Nepal and our first experience trekking. We contacted our guide, Sanjib Adhakari after reading reviews from his previous clients and it was the best decision we made. Sanjib made our whole experience much easier and more enjoyable! From regular contact before our trip, to booking hotels and flights for us, organizing our holiday was a very effortless experience. Sanjib is not only very knowledgable and experienced at trekking, he has a great sense of humour that makes even those longer days walking more fun! I would highly recommend Sanjib and have actually already begun organizing our next trek with him. Feel free to contact me at sarah_lyons@hotmail.com if you would like to know anything else or contact Sanjib directly at sanjib-adhikari@hotmail.com or check out his website at nepalguideinfo.com

In November 2012, I did the 14day trek to Mount Everest base camp. I decided not to go with an organised group / tour, and had a Nepalese guide recommended to me through someone on Trip Advisor. My reason not to go with one of the large organised company, is that I wanted to ensure the money went all the the Nepalese people - who work so hard. If you use Nepalese company / guides - it is cheaper and the big companies are not taking a big cut.
The guide I was recommended was Sanjib Adhikari, http://www.nepalguideinfo.com/ or you can reach him on sanjib-adhikari@hotmail.com, was a great guide. He has been doing treks for the last10+ years, and speaks very good english. He arranged everything exactly how I wanted, he gave me good advice before getting to Nepal and on of course on the trek.
When I got sick with what we thought was altitude sickness, but turned out to be food poisoning, he was fantastic, he looked after me and ensure I did the right thing to get better. We made it to Base camp, and I don't think I would have done it without his direction and guidance. I would highly recommend him.
You have alot more flexibility going with a Nepalese guide than an organised group. The organised group walk to the slowest person, which is frustrating for people who are faster, and pressure for those who are slow and feel like they are holding up the group. I had the most magical once in a life time trip. Please feel free to contact me about the trip or Sanjib.

My first experience on many trekking routes has made me an expert on making unique trekking itineraries as per the tastes, interests and budget of the western clients. For those international trekkers who want to climb high mountain passes and peaks, I can also organize this challenging and rewarding adventure. My experience in adventure tourism includes climbing to Mera peak, Island peak, Kalapathar, Gokyo peak, Tseryo ri and I have led expeditions across many high passes in Nepal, Larkye pass, Ampulapcha Pass, Chola pass, Renjula pass, Tashilapcha pass, Ganjala pass, thorong pass, Tilicho pass, (Mesokantola pass).
There are many types of treks available in Nepal, ranging from relaxed easy trekking where you can experience Nepalese Culture and Village life staying overnight in local lodges (tea-houses) in popular regions, to remote and restricted areas trekking that are off the beaten track and seldom visited by foreigners. All treks offer spectacular scenery and a good experience about Nepalese culture. If anyone wants to have tailor made treks, I can meet their requirements.
From time to time I keep upgrading my skills and knowledge by taking refresher trainings on safety, sanitation, first–aid, emergency rescue, hygiene and cooking. I am fluent in English, Chinese and computer literate. I can explain all tourism related topics to the best of my knowledge.

I truly hope that more people visit Nepal to see the beauty, I enjoyed very much my trip to Nepal and thanks to subindra for his excellent assistance. It is with pleasure and full confidence that I am able to recommend Nepalease guide subindra adhikari. Subindra was my guide and friend during Everest Base Camp - Gokyo trek in Oct 2006. He was able to tell us what to expect on the route, find us the best places to stay and fill in all the background information about our surroundings. Having experienced all kinds of holidays over 50 years in different countries and different continents. It was so wonderful experience with subindra adhikari he did an incredible job of guiding. Our next goal is to go to Mustang and of course the guide must be suvindra. This barely touches the depth of my experiences with subindra so Please feel free to contact me for more information.

While the EBC trek is the more famous the hike up the Gokyo Valley to Gokyo-Ri provides a much more impressive and stimulating view of Mt Everest, albeit and shorter trek. But when you reach the peak and can see Mt E. just a scant 12 air miles away it takes your breath away. Plus you can also see Cho Oyo, Lohtse, and Makalu all mountains also above 8,000m. From what I understand, the view from the viewing mountain at EBC does not give much more of the mountain that what people have seen while trekking to EBC. IMHO skip EBC and go to Gokyo!! Great view and fewer people
I'm not sure which base camp your writer went to, there is one on the Tibetan side at 16,900 ft and one on the Nepalese side at 17,600 ft but neither of them is as high as 21,400 ft which is much closer to height of camp 2, definitely not in the realm of your average trekker.
