Much of the world has a 44lb/20kg allowance for airline checked baggage in coach... 10+lbs for the empty bag? Does not compute! Wheeled luggage and adventure travel do not mix.
These heavy wheeled monsters are a pain unless you are taking a cab everywhere. I prefer a backpack w/o wheels like the REI Tech Tour. You can carry it easily in crowds, up/down stairs, on public transit. Toting everywhere you go isn't much more effort than carrying your daypack of necessities. We even used to tour carrying our luggage - but in this time of anal bombers, they won't get thru all the detection systems and there are no check rooms anymore.
