Best Light Quality
A tester who packed the Tikka Plus 2 while peakbagging in New Hampshire’s White Mountain National Forest loved the lamp’s intuitive functions. When batteries are 50 percent depleted, a small red indicator light blinks on “as obviously as a car’s gas light.” The Petzl shoots a bright point of light straight ahead and fades smoothly outward to the periphery with no dark spots.
On high mode, it easily illuminates good bear-bag branches after a late dinner. The tilter clicks firmly into place with one hand, and the deep and narrow on/off switch remains clickable even when wearing gloves. One tester liked the night vision-friendly red LED on buggy nights around camp: “Fewer moths and bugs try to dive-bomb your face,” he reports. Drawback: The beam isn’t focused enough to stay tight over long distances.
I've been using the Tikka 2 since they were first brought out into the Market. I tried 4 other types and brands and have taken them all but the Tikka II back to get a refund. From three -10 deg cold nights at 3500 ft. to 103+ in the Desert the Tikka 2 performance and battery life has never failed me. I've read a lot of books and maps at night with the light on low and I also use it for night fishing out on my Boat using the Red lens on low so that I don't lose my night vision and then using the high bright setting to find my way back to camp since there are no lights on the Lake. I also have done 8 all night through hikes just for the fun of it and was very pleased with the lights ability to keep us on the trail without stumbing over rocks and roots. And it was great on 3 night time Coon hunts. Great little light..I now have five of them stashed in my various Packs, Boat and Truck. Long distance lighting is not really a necessaity when hiking at night, unless your into Search & Rescue. I've found that you only really need to light up about 20 feet ahead of you and besides having a light the shines out to 50 - 100 yards just eats up batteries, and that is why I took the rest back for a refund..
