I just tried to create a simple map and it didn't work. The first hurdle was finding the appropriate clicks on your website, but even after creating the map it was impossible to view it in any of the available formats. However, you succeeded in getting me to give you my email so you can send me junk email, to which I will be adding BACKPACKER.COM, even though I subscribe to your magazine.

Hi, I have the Backpacker Pro app for Android. How do I save a map for offline use? I will be traveling and will be without data service.

Please advise.

thanks.

Backpacker - what's wrong with you people? Trip ID, Schmip ID. You' re website doesn't work.

Hammerdale
Jun 22, 2012

Re: Chris looking for Section 1 of the Long Trail (post on 4/16/2012) - the trip is there (backpacker.com/trips/434853). You can just add the "Trip ID" after "backpacker.com/trips/" OR find it visually by clicking on the national map on the front of the "Destinations" part of the website and "drill down" to Vermont and find it there.

Re: Mark F. looking for trip 43669 (post on 11/16/2011) - the trip is there as well (backpacker.com/trips/43699)... You did mean the 6.95 mile hike in Colorado for "Mounts Democrat, Cameron, and Lincoln"... yes?

I hope this helps / makes sense to some of the frustrated people out there... This site is actually the best source for high quality hiking (biking and paddling too) maps that I have been able to find (I am NOT affiliated with the magazine!) - and you don't even have to be a subscriber or pay a fee! AND you can download files for an iPhone, Android phone, GPS phone, to your Backpacker log-in account, to your GPS device, or get a Goggle Earth version of just about every single one of the 3000+ maps.

Now I need to step away from the keyboard and get some fresh air!

Jun 22, 2012

YOU NEED TO BE LOGGED IN, Everybody.... Yes, I am "yelling"... I have saved 300+ trips to "my account" and downloaded Google Earth (kml) and GPS (gpx) files for all 300+ trips as well. I DO occasionally get a "bad trip" or "marked private" message (check your trip ID very carefully and retype it) but it is rare - I used to get them a lot more BEFORE I SET UP AN ACCOUNT!!

Or how about following a link ON backpacker.com to a trip and STILL getting the "bad trip," "marked private" message?

Best magazine, worst website. Ever.

Apr 16, 2012

I selected region, state, trip, and it tells me "cannot access marked private" even though the trip (section 1 of Long trail for example) were submitted by Backpacker magazine? More frustrating than companies that don't have web sites is companies that have web sites that are not maintained/don't work. can this be fixed PLEASE?

Hey all,
If you click on the "Destinations" link, and click your desired state on the U.S. map that shows up in gold, you will be directed to a map of that state and the featured hikes for that state. If you click on a featured hike, the map for that hike comes up.
To get a map for a different destination, you have to search the park you are going to, be specific.
Good Luck!

Jan 12, 2011

Nothing has changed with this mag.It promises info about hikes, but when you enter the Trip ID, you are left with an error message. Why doesn't someone on the mag staff tell the subscribers how to correct this problem? The world wonders!

Jan 12, 2011

I think Backpacker.com needs help with their website! I get error messages, private notices, and even with numerous searchs, am still unable to find the trip mentioned in the most recent March magazine! Come on, do some work on the website and get it working! And I have been subscribed for years, and still get the notice "subscribe now"! Enough! I'll take what info I have at this time and find it myself in another form!

I cannot access Trip ID 830236 printed in the October 2010 issue. I get the same error message as Doug. In fact, I've been all over the website for a couple of hours, and I've just now figured out how to even access these Trip ID numbers! Boy, talk about non-user-friendly. Here's an idea--why don't you just simply add a text box on your website where you can just add the number?! This has been aggravating. And it's the primary reason I'm even on the website!

Doug
Oct 23, 2010

I bought the October 2010 issue and attempted to locate the Ozark Highlands Trail information, Trip
ID 830236. This is the response: Error loading trip: You do not have access to view this trip, it is marked private.

What's the deal?

For all looking for maps, there are thousands of maps on the backpacker.com site. You can view them online, in google earth, send them to your mobile phone, or print them on waterproof paper with myTopo.

Go to: http://www.backpacker.com/destinations/ and search by park, state, or long trail.

To use the tripIDs in the magazine, type in: backpacker.com/hikes/34992 or any number after /hikes, and you will access the trip report.

Happy trails...

I agree. The August 2010 issue promises free maps and downloads, but nowhere could I find any sort of directions for accessing these phantom free maps and downloads. I have to agree with comments above....where are the instructions for finding a map, anywhere? with or without gps? I remember reading in backpacker to put the map number in the URL...but, i have no map number, i'd just like to look at an area and see what hikes there are in that area. How do i do that, and does anyone answer these questions? I see a sep 08,2009 on this page? never gets cleaned out? no one answers? hmmm? what gives?

i have started making (big) wall maps for hiking areas, and parts of the south that are highly traveled. i sell them pretty cheap for the quality and size of the final print. they look even better in print, and mounted/framed.
see my website: www.hubbardmapworks.com
i can also custom make maps for other parts of the country/world...so write me if you are interested in something different from the store brand maps. (contact form in site)
thanks,

Need topo maps? Go to topoquest.com and cynicsoftware.com. You can download topo maps straight to an iphone using a topos2go (a free app) but it's not necessary to have a phone. the websites have a pretty good selection of NPs and Forest land. PLUS... they are free.

Your "Editor's Note" (Nov 2009) was a real winner. I am jealous of other people who live in places other than a flat plain as I do. One queston about Google Earth. When I zoom in at a certain point all becomes out of focus and blured. I can't seem to rectify this situation.
