Local Hikes: San Francisco

The best hikes near San Francisco.

Your Guide

East Bay Casual Hiking Club (hiking.bondon.com)

Your Hikes
» Sunset-North Ridge Loop, Angel Island SP Link two trails on San Francisco Bay’s largest island. From Ayala Cove, climb to a grassy ridge on North Ridge Trail. Near mile two, take a short side trip to 788-foot Mt. Livermore for views of Mt. Diablo and Mt. Tamalpais. Merge onto Sunset Trail for a switchback descent to the dock. (Ferry access only; transit.511.org) Miles from city center 9; Trip ID 756610

» Stinson Beach to Pantoll Ranger Station, Mt. Tamalpais SP “When it comes to NorCal scenery, this hike has it all,” says club founder John Bondon. The 3.5-miler leaves the beach on Dipsea Trail and climbs through redwoods to the ranger station. Finish the loop on Steep Ravine Trail, which descends along Webb Creek. Miles from city center 23; Trip ID 764779

» Berry Creek Falls, Big Basin Redwoods SP This 10.5-mile loop follows Skyline to the Sea Trail through 300-foot-tall redwoods to Berry Creek Falls. Watch the 65-foot waterfall pour down a mossy cliff, then continue north .7 mile to three more cascades—Silver, Cascade, and Golden Falls. Head back on Sunset Trail. Miles from city center 70; Trip ID 51200

Looks like a misprint on your Stinson to Pantoll hike. There's no way to do it as a 3.5 mile loop as that's the one way distance. For a loop, take the Dipsea from Stinson Beach and go UP Steep Ravine. At Pantoll, Pick up the Matt Davis Trail and follow that all the way back down to Stinson. You could do it in the reverse (clockwise) direction, but I find it easier to go up Steep Ravine rather than down. The loop is about 7.5 miles.
