For a rough day on the trail, wear Patagonia's stable Scramble 35 daypack.
Heavy-Duty Roller: Mountain Hardwear Juggernaut Series | Lightweight Roller: Granite Gear Ultraflight 115 | Classic Duffel: The North Face Base Camp Series | All-in-One: High Sierra Overpass Wheeled | Traveler's Daypack: Patagonia Scramble 35 | Camera Pack: LowePro CompuRover
This versatile pack has the organization of a good carry-on, yet it's comfortable enough to carry 20 pounds of dayhiking gear on rough Alps terrain. It has a zippered top pocket for wallet and passport, two deep bottle sleeves, and a roomy zippered front pocket for storing an extra layer. A slim plastic frame sheet gives the pack structure and support. And it's stable: "The contoured shoulder straps and simple unpadded hipbelt snugged the load securely into my spine," said one tester after an aggressive scramble up the Le Parmelan in the Haute Savoie region of France. $125; 2 lbs. 6 oz.; 2,200 cu. in.; patagonia.com.
