Argentina has lovely mountains, but you might want to stay away from the rivers for a while. On Christmas Day, a relative of the piranha called the palometa swarmed a beach near the Parana River, 186 miles from Buenos Aires. Reuters reports that at least 70 people suffered chomps on their extremities, and one 7-year-old girl lost a finger.
Movies (like this terrible one) have turned piranhas into a campy joke in recent years, but Argentine locals are understandably alarmed:
"This is not normal," [director of emergency services] Federico Cornier said on television. "It's normal for there to be an isolated bite or injury, but the magnitude in this case was great ... this is an exceptional event."
We'll stick to the hilly terrain, thank you very much. And maybe bring Ving Rhames along just for good measure (link is most definitely NSFW).
