To encourage the trek as and easy one for the family can be deceiving. I am sure some kids have lots of experience trekking, but there are plenty who won't. And once they read the article, they will think that it's an easy family experience. I did the Machame Route and summited with a group of very fit adult marathoners, many who suffered in the altitude - they couldn't carry their packs or their water! We waited 50 minutes at the top to get photos with the group that really lagged behind (it was supposed to be 5-15 minutes).

What is not shown in the video is the carnage along the way - huge tour outfits from around the world with a members crying and unable to move, members sick, members getting pulled up by porters or walked down and many who are punch drunk and dazed with "mountain sickness". In fact the tour outfit I had gone with had a fatality the following year. There is no mention of the dangerous of this to the masses who tour Kili thinking it's a fun walk.

And I agree that the porters should have gotten more acknowledgement - they do all the hard work including carrying everything from the chairs, toilet tent, eggs, water, etc. Often they get paid for each member that summits and they need to deal with the medical situations that happen more often than not.

My family, ranging in ages from 11 to 53, climbed Kili in August, 2012. It was the biggest moment of my life, to be up there with my family.
The guides were especially excited about getting my 11-year-old son on the summit.
Congratulations to these families!!!

I was very disappointed that the local guides and porters were almost completely ignored in these video updates. One of the highlights of my Kili climb eight years ago, was interacting with the people who work and live on the mountain. And really, the Dorn/Whittaker/et al families, would never have made it to the summit without these hard-working folks. It's really a bit shameful.
