Sleeping Bag Review: Mountain Hardwear Lamina 32

This sack earns high marks as an affordable, versatile summer bag.

by: The Backpacker Editors

©Matthew J. Reigner

Normally, it doesn't bode well for a bag when our tester reports wearing a jacket to bed. But considering the fact that temps dipped nearly 10 degrees below this synthetic bag's 32-degree rating, and the cold-sleeping tester snoozed soundly all night with the extra layer, this sack earns high marks as an affordable, versatile summer bag. It packs small enough for a light weekend load, but the draft tube, hood, and efficient mummy cut make it plenty warm for cool alpine nights. A two-way full-length zipper allows for good ventilation in mild weather. $120; 3 sizes; 2 lbs. 13 oz. (regular) (800) 953-8375; www.mountainhardwear.com.

I spent all last week with this bag and while it is lightweight and silky to crawl into, I froze every night. The temps were in the mid 40's and I wore my down jacket to bed. The only way I would sleep in this bag during freezing temperatures would be on the living room floor with a nice fire in the fireplace! Great bag for warm summer nights, but don't expect much for cool weather.
