Boot Review: Salomon Extend Mid

On hot summer days, these breathable shoes beat the heat.

by: Steve Howe, BACKPACKER Rocky Mountain Editor

Even the best waterproof/breathable liners limit ventilation on long summer days, and they also slow draining and drying if water comes in over the ankle. So for the hottest conditions, consider a non-waterproof shoe like the Extend. It matches a breathable mesh upper with leather and rubber reinforcements in high-wear areas for a good balance between air conditioning, foot protection, and durability. The flexible, EVA-cushioned midsole and pillow-soft ankle padding make these a good choice for hikers who want light-duty shoes with instant break-in. On mucky spring hikes, the shallow tread gripped well on all but the slickest surfaces. If you want more rigid support for heavier loads and off-trail terrain, go with Salomon's Pro Trek 5 LTR GTX ($110), a bargain with all-leather uppers, stiffer sole, and Gore-Tex liner. Both are best for medium to wide feet.
