There's a Bomb in My Backpack

Could a trail-savvy terrorist hike a nuke into America through wilderness areas on the Canadian border? An anonymous hiker-patriot alerts the White House.

Mr. President, I understand that you have other concerns right now. I'd rather suffer chronic bunions than have to listen to GM execs plead for an umpteenth billion. But you might recall that back in 2006, when home prices were quadrupling by the day and even my terrier-Chihuahua mix could get a zero-interest A.R.M., the chief concern of the White House was safety–namely, preventing another terrorist attack within America's borders. That's when Congress asked its watchdog group, the U.S. Government Accountability Office, to examine security on the U.S.-Canada border. After a yearlong investigation, the GAO issued a summary of its findings. Maybe you remember the ominously titled fall 2007 report: "Security Vulnerability at Unmanned, Unmonitored U.S. Border Locations."

The exposé detailed security deficiencies along the northern border that would shock even Nancy Pelosi. Equipped with duffel bags and suitcases, the GAO team traversed much of the 5,000-mile frontier, crossing illegally at numerous checkpoints and remote locations. They'd have had a harder time sneaking into the local cineplex. "The proximity of road[s] to the border allowed investigators to cross undetected," stated the report. The memo went on to note that agents "successfully simulat[ed] the cross-border movement of radioactive materials or other contraband into the United States from Canada."

Scared? Neither was President Bush, who was preoccupied with bigger priorities (I forget what). Likewise, the mainstream press, Homeland Security officials, and Congress largely ignored the memo. In fact, by the time the report came out, the country's attention had been almost entirely hijacked by tanking home prices and presidential campaigning. Even senators who weren't running for president virtually ignored the report.

Not me. As a patriot, I was alarmed. As a backpacker, I was offended. Could some of our most sacred backcountry areas be used as crossing points by terrorists? The North Cascades? The Pasayten Wilderness? Glacier National Park? I called Greg Kutz, the GAO investigator who led the project. "If no one's working at a checkpoint, you just drive around the gate," he told me, recalling a successful crossing from one of Canada's eastern provinces. "On one occasion, we stood in front of a camera at an unmanned station and started waving. No one showed up for a long time, and when he did, he asked, 'Are you guys the camera repairmen?'" And that was a guarded crossing. What's to prevent some myopic, scripture-twisting mass murderer from loading a backpack full of anthrax or ricin or botulism and hiking through a proper wilderness area, far from any roads or checkpoints or marked trails? According to Kutz, not much. "We're not anywhere close to having a secure northern border," he told me. "In fact, we don't even know if securing the border is a realistic objective."

For perspective, consider the disparity in resources that the U.S. Customs and Border Protection allocates to the southern and northern borders. On the Mexico border, there are hundreds of miles of fencing and walls; up north, there are virtually none. Across California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas, almost 12,000 CBP agents (and calls for additional troops from the National Guard!) keep watch, while Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, New York, Vermont, and Maine–encompassing a border more than twice as long–have fewer than 2,000 agents. The U.S.-Mexico border has millions of dollars' worth of cameras, unmanned infrared-equipped aircraft, and ground-motion detectors. Up north? CBP has little surveillance equipment beyond the cameras (apparently in need of repair) at its manned guard stations, many of which are only staffed from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Excuse me, but does Homeland Security really think Al Qaeda keeps union hours? For all we know, the next terrorists-in-training aren't enrolled in a Florida flight school–they're heading to Wyoming for a NOLS course.

Speaking from someone who is an avid outdoor enthusiast, like many of you, and as a person in law enforcement, this is not far-fetched at all. it is the very people like yourselves that would rather believe (like a common sheep) that nothing like this could or would happen. You would all rather go about your merry ways and expect us to protect you. You forget though, you are the people we rely on to do our jobs, we need your eyes and ears, and good tips to generate leads then follow up with probable cause. Without you, we simply cannot be everywhere, at the same time. We compose 1-2% of the population depending.

So when you say "yeah right, this is bogus, nothing like that would ever happen, and can't" try to ask yourself how many people said that before 2 planes were flown into the Trade Center, then it took common citizens, who stepped up like sheepdogs (like myself), and took care of business for the flight headed through PA.

All of you naysayers, and people who believe bad things can't and won't happen will always need someone like me, who carries a gun on a daily basis, who protects you, and your loved ones, in the background, and you shun me and say, don't carry a gun, you don't have the right, no one has that right! I always keep a wary eye, and always will, and will always carry a gun, despite some of you with your best efforts to disarm me and the rest of the good citizens with the heart to do the same (even those not being in law enforcement who carry, legally).

It's always an interesting time dealing with the sheep, I care for you, watch out for you, looking for the wolves, even in the wilderness where I enjoy my days off, because clandestine methamphetamine labs which are discovered by the common unarmed citizen often spells deadly disaster for that sheep. But keep doing what you're doing and try to be not so naive, I'll be watching, and I hope you're glad that I am, along with the rest of my brothers and sisters in law enforcement. And please, we are citizens like the rest of you, please, allow us and the rest of the people who choose to carry concealed who are not in law enforcement to continue carrying. We all watch out for you.

I'm not sure what's more tongue-in-cheek, the article or the responses. I do like the "wolf in polar fleece" analogy. Very Python-esque.

I can't believe that Backpacker would even publish this crap. Have terrorists ever entered the US from Canada. All the 911 terrorists waltzed directly into the US, no need to stop in Canada and sneak in from there.

As for Canadians protecting the wilderness routes into the US like a national secret, did you ever stop to think that no one could tell you the routes because no one has ever done it. Every Canadian knows that it would be theoretically easy to sneak into the US through a wilderness area, but that doesn't mean that we all do it.

Also, I doubt the writer actually talked to any Canadian's because no Canadian has said "eh" since 1975. The only people who say "eh" are Americans who are pretending to quote Canadians.

Canada should increase it's border security to keep ignorant Americans like this so called writer out of our fine country!!!

Get a life.

I have encountered an occasion in which an individual of concern to the U.S. entered this country by way of Canada. Subsequently, he left the same way.

Doesn't anyone hike outdoors far from people anymore? If there is one other, who reads this site, hasn't it occurred to you in any of your hikes that no one is there to see you?

Hasn't anyone else observed our border with Canada? It's LONG. It's heavily WOODED. There's a really BIG lake to cross.

Get a grip on yourself! If someone really wants to get here, has the time to research all the entry approaches, can pass up opportunities gone wrong, doesn't have a time constraint, and can try again repeatedly, there is an excellent chance he/she will get in.

Geez, relax. Enjoy life. Go for a hike.

This is quite possibly the dumbest article I've ever read. Backpacker, you usually do better. Do we beleive that Canada is just giving a away nukes to hikers that want to sneak one into the US?

This is ridiculous. Backpacker Magazine should be ashamed to have printed this silly article. How convenient an author's name, too; "Anonymous". Let's get some things straight here. The chances of any "terrorist" being successful in getting a nuke or other device into Canada is pretty slim. On top of that, they'd have to then transport it by foot across the Canadian/U.S. border?! Nah. Ain't gonna happen. Unless it was an inside job, just like 9/11 was. And, yes, 9/11 was definitely an inside job, for the purpose of the illuminati and globalist agendas. If you are actually dumb enough to believe the mainstream media, then you can remain dumb, or finally open your eyes up to the reality that a very few rule the masses, including you. Anyway, "Anonymous" sounds like someone that is in favor of a yet, bigger government (can it get even bigger?) Egads! More government employees?! Seriously?! I'm taxed enough as it is. The founders of this country would have become terrorists by now, because they wouldn't have stood for such an intrusive, taxing, socialistic government that we have now! They would have started a second American revolution and thrown off this oppressive, corrupt system. And, as far as drugs going over the borders; may I suggest readers and "Anonymous" looking into the CIA connection to the "War on Drugs" and even people like Clinton's connection to this (look up Mena, Arkansas and the cover-up with drug smuggling there, done by many in the government). That's just the tip of the iceberg. Anyway, we do not need more border security along the Canadian border! In fact, it urks me that we now need a passport to even cross it! Canada is one of the best neighbors we could ever ask for. Would you rather have North Korea along our northern border? Or China? Of course not! (Unless you are one of those vast majority of Communists that already live here). I don't like Canada's government much, but the people there, in general, are wonderful folks! (Though, probably just as uneducated as most Americans, when it comes to the reality). If we need any kind of border security, it's this: militarize the southern border of the U.S., to stop all drug traffic there (Mexico is a very unstable country, and the drug cartels have made it a volatile place--not to mention all of the illegal immigrants that have been taxing the law-abiding U.S. citizens by their very presence in our country, taking away jobs, lowering our standard of living, increasing our health care expenses, etc.). Also, it's time to sift out all the corruption in the U.S. government and it's agencies--many of which have become rogue, or at least elements of them have, e.g. the CIA. Another thing that needs to be done is to restrict immigration into the U.S. Our nation now has an official occupancy of over 310 million. Unofficially, that number is probably closer to 360 million, considering all the illegal/undocumented border crossers and such, witin our country. I just saw a story today, of a Liberian in this country, whose daughter had just been placed into protective custody by the government due to her being sexually assaulted by boys in their new neighborhood. The Liberian father of this girl didn't seem to think the boys did anything wrong, and he didn't seem to even want his daughter back. Why was this man and his family allowed into our country? What kind of system do we have for screening folks seeking citizenship here? If they do not have morals or values that will increase our nation's wealth and peace, then they should never be allowed to enter. It's as simple as that. My final point is this: we are living in a land where morals are disappearing, the values of our founding fathers are scoffed and ridiculed, and the mass populace embraces the death of individual liberty, property, and happiness, for safety, security, and entertainment. The civilized man is being replaced by the savage, and this nation is on it's way to an end, just as every imperialistic system has done throughout history, due to it's greed, corruption, and pluralistic ways (look at Greece and Rome, if you need a history lesson). I believe America shouldn't have to worry about international terrorists. Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are simply oil and drug route wars and imperialism, in the disguise of a War on Terror. If there was still time, America should be worrying about the domestic terrorists here--the corrupt in our government and institutions that wish to loot us for every selfish gain at the law-abiding citizen's loss. They call us goyim and cattle. And, yes, there is a "They". It's time to wake up Americans. But, if you would like to join "Anonymous" here in being issued your wonderful Gore-Tex rain suit and backpacking gear and being payed full-time to patrol our nation's northern border to stop the non-existent threat of a hiker carrying a dirty bomb (all at my, and every other tax-payer's expense) then, by all means, please don't let me stop you. I just see it as a quicker end to a nation whose tombstone is already being made.

They still have to get into Canada though...assuming they didn't originate there. Maybe getting into Canada is easier (I've never had an occasion to try)but still...

I'm sure "the terrorists" all read Backpacker to check the pulse of America. Oh...wait, the majority of the readers polled thought having a gun for "protection" was a good idea and that Republicans would better protect the environment.
Sorry, my bad. Nevermind!

What a load of bunk!! I suppose this guy still believes that the 9/11 terrorists came from Canada too. That has been disproven, as each one of them has been proven to have entered the US 'legitimately,' and none came into the US via Canada. I can't believe that a number of US politicians still grab headlines for themselves by claiming these terrorists entered the US via Canada. And as for the illegal drug trade: That flows both ways across the border. Marijuana may go down into the US, but cocaine comes up into Canada via the US. If there is a market for it the drug trade will continue. Am I against more border security? No I'm not. In fact, bring it on. Just do it for the right reasons and not based on paranoia and ignorance of the facts.

So are the americans realy so scared of us Canadians? Do bad things only enter america via Canada? I think you have enough nutcases and illigal immigrants(with connections to terrorist groups) yourself down there that you dont have to worry to much about someone walking across the borders bringing in a bomb. And by the way it probably would be way easier for the nutcase to buy the supplies for his bombs in the united states of america then in Canada.

I had to comment and haven't even read the article yet. As I read I will ask myself... "Does this guy care about wilderness at all or is he just looking to make a name for himself"? Thanks for keeping the border in check and us backpackers who don't believe in them.

There are definitely easier ways to get a bomb into the US than to hike it through the wilderness. How much does the average nuke weigh anyway?

mike
Jul 23, 2009

I agree.. the people of the united states should build a giant dome over themselves to avoid the posibility that someone could enter undetected.

I bet all the terrorists are glad you gave the info over the net.
