Electronic Convergence: Multitasking GPS Units
Most do-it-all devices add a camera as an afterthought. Not the N95, which is more like a camera with GPS, phone, and music player. The 5-megapixel camera uses high-end Carl Zeiss optics and features eight shooting modes, plus it has options to adjust contrast, white balance, colors, and ISO settings. Activate the free Sports Tracker (sportstracker.nokia.com), and your photos are automatically positioned along the GPS track. Using the included street maps, testers found last-minute camping stores, remote trailheads, and post-trip burger joints. And even with all the built-in functions, the N95 is lightweight and pocket-friendly (the 2.6-inch screen slides up to reveal the music player controls). The catch? Consider this unit a light-duty GPS best-suited to on-trail dayhikes; the basic navigation functions are similar to the iPhone's, the rechargeable battery lasts a relatively short time (four to six hours in GPS mode), and acquisition time is slower than average.
