Miniwiz HyMini Delux Portable Fan

The HyMini solar-powered fan does way more then just keep you cool

Got a storm instead of sun? This little unit solves the problem with a fan that captures wind power. Charge up the internal battery at home (in the wall or via your computer's USB port), then refresh it in the field using the solar panel, the windmill, or both. When a breeze (9 to 45 mph) spins the fan, a green LED indicates that the battery is charging. The included USB plug charges camera and GPS batteries, and it comes with five cell-phone plugs. $75; 5 oz.; hymini.com. Reader service #125

Dear Berne Broudy,
This is a very poor gear review. More like a lame and empty advertisement. A good gear review should at least give dimensions, weights, and sizes, and perhaps how it worked when you used it. Your personal experience with the item, form factor, durability, packability, style, etc., would all help convince me that you actually TRIED this item. Since you've only provided a "courtesy photo" and no pics of you actually setting up or using this, I'm pretty sure you're full of it.

Backpacker editors: please hold your writers to higher standards. Stop allowing your review content to be taken over by these airheaded powersellers who've never packed anything, anywhere!

I'm an old (sort of) B/P now. In three years hope to be a retired (from job) bike tourist in Europe for 1 or 2 years.

Can the wind power part be mounted on a bike? Can solor panel and wind unit be used at the same time? (windmill on handlebars solor panel on rack)

Rayovac sells a product that plugs into a USB post, and charges 2 AA/AAA batteries...

Why do all these solar devices claim to charge GPS's? Most new GPS's such as the Garmin Oregon or Colorado have removable batteries which can not be charged with mini-USB connectors. You would need a AA battery charger box to do this.
