Not only is this article over a year old, it's so narrow in thought. I was a huge Backpacker Mag fan in the early 2000s and just recently discovered the Facebook page. After navigating a bit on this site, I'm thinking Chris might be correct about the direction of your magazine!

So for everyone not totally satisfied with the direction Backpacker has taken, I'll be starting a community based website (hopefully printed one day) that's realistic and informative on what hiking actually is. Not shiny gear and $5,000 guide led trips. Keep your eyes out for ThruHiker.com!

I agree with the guy from Ohio. I work 40+ hours a week and don't live near any mountains or national parks. It's tough to find time to get away for a 4 or 5 night trip and go climb a mountain. I'm not in any of these categories, either. I'm a guy who goes for a one or two night trip when my friends can as well. I enjoy nature, but I'm not consumed by watching it for hours. I carry gear i can afford, which isn't a $500 Arcteryx pack or $400 Nemo tarp tent, and usually isn't listed as a top pick in Backpacker's gear guides. You guys need a new category of hiker: The time strapped, budget conscious, blue collar hiker. I read backpacker like a religious manual, but I feel like the target audience is 20yr olds who can set off to hike Kilimanjaro for 2 months and don't work a full time job like the rest of us. It's frustrating.

You need to add about a dozen more personality/hiking types to even get close to all the types out there.

I go out for 2-3 months at a time.
I am a minimalist and carry ultralight gear, except that I must have an AM/FM radio.
I take only rice, tea, seasonings, and aluminum foil.
I have my film bottle of fishing gear, animal snares, and sidearm.
I stay above the snow line and off the trails to avoid Flatlanders an Rangers.
The experiences I have had are ... You would not believe me.
My wife says that my eyes are several shades bluer when I get back.

I think each of your personality types misses the mark, at least for me. I am still using whatever gear I bought 30 years ago, including a down vest a friend gave me (it was full of holes and I patched it up with duct tape). I don't have money for all of that expensive gear and frankly, it isn't necessary.

I think way too many Backpacker readers are gear junkies who think they need the latest whiz-bang gizmos just to hike a 10-mile trail. I mean, do you REALLY need a backpack with one of those silly sippy straw things built in? I think not. GPS? Hardly. Can you read a simple topographic map? Can you just look at the sky and tell what the weather is up to and which direction you're going? Don't depend on expensive toys to keep you safe. Learn the basics, lighten your load, and enjoy the OUTDOORS. Not your toys.

Backpacker Mag,
Not everyone is a junkie.... Where is the Weekend Warrior? The person who gets out when they can, the person who has no peaks within a days drive, the person who just wants to GET AWAY for a little while. Because that's me, I do enjoy some nature(hey check out that squirrel, I want to take my kids (when I have them). Mileage isn't for me, and never will be (Im more interested in quality not quantity). And I would love to be that multi guy, but don't have the time money or friends who have the time and money to get all that sweet gear. And as far as the pusher... To each their own, but I think you missed a big part of your readers when you made this. But I know you can do better, add some more for the people who backpack but also go to Football games on Sundays. For the people who paddle, but also see movies! For the birders who also like to attend speaker series... you get my point.

See myself as a little bit of all six. The peak bagger, mileage master, and the limit pusher are all basically the same type. As they say on the AT, "hike your own hike".

Save for the first hiker, all were kids. Me? Winter weekend warrior. I suppose you could call it peekbagging, but a nice meander to the site or lean-to, make base camp, eat dinner, get drunk, sleep, brekky, hit a couple of Cats peeks the next day, come back, cry, drink more, eat more, sleep, hit Olive's Cafe for brekky on the way out.

Love it, I'm so the limit pusher.
