I would check the legitimacy of your winner. Not to say that it wasn't his photo, but I had that identical (possibly just similar) photo in color as my wallpaper about five years ago. A man named Scott Flaherty claims to have taken this photo. Type in Snake River Overlook on google and it will show up.

Sad that whoever judged this contest didn't know enough about photography to appreciate that the "grand prize" winner is just a copy of a famous Ansel Adams photo. Talk about about a total lack of originality. Perhaps next year the winner can be a photo of "tunnel view" at Yosemite.

Sean, I did Google the image you had as a wallpaper and the winner's image is quite different. The sky, the position of the photographer on the overlook, the lighting, the width of the landscape captured (wider angle lens), and more.
As a note to the site programmers, the slide show isn't working on Firefox as of 04/15/11 (but is OK in IE8).

To Backpacker. Award winning photos of some of the most beautiful places on Earth and the best we get is a 3x5? Come on. You can do better than that. I want to see these full screen and then make them my wall paper.

Would love it if I could see higher res versions of these photos; at least an "enlarge" button or something. Using Safari v. 5.1, so don't know if there is this option in other browsers.
