Kalalau Trail, HI| The Ruby Crest Trail, Humboldt NF, NV |Thru-hike the John Muir Trail, CA Sugarbowl Loop, Kings Canyon NP |Sentinel Dome, Yosemite NP

“This trail is the all you-can-eat smorgasbord of what the Sierra Nevada has to offer,” says Cheryl Norlin. And it should be: It tracks right through its heart. You’ll enter Yosemite and Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks as well as the Mt. Whitney Zone. It’s three weeks of sheer rock walls, mile-deep canyons, skyscraper-tall trees, saw-blade ridges, golden-hued granite, translucent green lakes, and cobalt skies. Most hike from south to north, but our team suggests going southbound, to allow more acclimatization time. Target August and early September to avoid snowpack.

I HAVE NOT WALKED EITHER WAY, BUT REALLY...WHO GIVES A RATS ????

When I thru-hiked, I went South to North. It made more sense to me to acclimatized at Whitney Portal for a day or two and summit then backpack downhill from there. A coworker of mine backpacked North-South starting on the same day-he was miserable and said getting out of Yosemite was beastly. We suffered for the summit of Whitney, then we had smooth hiking from there. I do know most people prefer North-South, but for me, it'll always be Whitney-Yosemite.

I didn't notice that this short article for an extraordinary trail said that most hike south to north. That is certainly not my opinion, but the only part that Backpacker mag used of my "essay" was the smorgasbord part in quotes.

It's better to go from north to south so you can acclimate to the higher elevations. For tips and meal planning, where to resupply, http://www.johnmuirtrail.org

I have hiked the JMT five times going for the sixth time this summer. Most people go from YNP to Whitney. If you leave early you do meet a lot of PCT'ers going north though. Anyway you do it, it is a fantastic walk. Don't forget to stop in for a couple of beers at Edison Lake.

I hiked from Bishop Pass to Mt. Whitney (90miles)of the JMT last summer with Rhys,my 13 yr old son, and the JMT is a smorgasbord of scenery, every day, from morning until night. We met probably 15 people going North to South, none going the other way as through hikers.

I hiked the Muir Trail last summer. I disagree with the above comment stating that "most hike from south to north."

From all the info I gathered and from talking to people it seemed North to South is the route most take. Only two people I talked to were going South to North.
