Wow! Backpacker really not helping anyone survive here. Survival skills should include how to make an appropriate fire that doesn't make matters worse. I am also curious as to who goes near a wilderness area without some form of survival gear? Unless maybe a plane crash. My advice: get some skills by practicing in your own backyard, and the get some decent outdoor survival gear that you can afford and never go anywhere close to the wilderness without it. I get mine at <a href="https://www.patriotprovisions.com>www.patriotprovisions.com</a>.

The note for the area stated the pine needles were soaked...

Give them what for!!! I was a volunteer fire fighter/EMT for the local dept. & I know exactly how you feel.
Backpacker magazine needs to show a wee bit of common sense when they teach people this stuff. a wee bit of respect for the forest & all the animals would not hurt either....not to mention all the people who have to be evacuated every time there's a forest fire.

I concur..this fire is a diaster waiting to happen...

Please redo this slide show to include a step of clearing the fire area down to mineral soil before lighting! We are having enough trouble with wildfires this season without Backpacker teaching folks to make fires in the pine needles!
