Hiking Switzerland's Via Alpina: Climbing the Monch

After 100 miles hiking in the Swiss Alps, the Backpacker editors couldn't resist a summit of one of Europe's most famous peaks, the Monch.
  • Contributing Editor, John Harlin, had a cool idea of how to spend our last day in Switzerland: "We'll climb the Monch," he said. And Jon Dorn, Dennis Lewon, and Shannon Davis followed. (Jonathan Dorn)
  • The southeast ridge of the Monch is a mix of limestone, gneiss, and snow. (Jonathan Dorn)
  • With easy access from Jungfraujoch, the highest rail station in Europe, you can climb the Monch in a half-day. (Jonathan Dorn)
  • Shannon Davis kicks steps up the southeast ridge of the Monch, the most-climbed peak of the Berner Trilogy (the Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau). (Jonathan Dorn)
  • The 13,474-foot summit of the Monch. (Jonathan Dorn)
  • The Monch forms part of a mountain ridge between the Jungfrau and Jungfraujoch to the west, and the Eiger to the east. (Jonathan Dorn)
  • There's not a lot of room to spread out on the summit of the Monch. (Jonathan Dorn)
  • John Harlin III is happy to reach the corniced 13,474-foot summit. (Jonathan Dorn)
  • The southeast ridge of the Monch. (Jonathan Dorn)
  • When you summit, you're only half way home. Here, our rope team descends with Jon Dorn leading the way. We made it back to the train with five minutes to spare. (Jonathan Dorn)
  • Looking down at The Sphinx, an observatory at Jungfraujoch. (Jonathan Dorn)
