Hike Switzerland's Via Alpina: Griesalp to Lauterbrunnen

The Editors' Choice testing crew finishes their final day under the base of the mighty Eiger.
  • Dennis Lewon hikes out of the tiny hamlet of Griesalp toward Sefinenfurgge, the second highest mountain pass on the Via Alpina.
  • Shannon Davis climbs steadily upward toward the pass.
  • Seldom traveled late in the season, the Via Alpina was covered with untracked snow that grew deeper the closer we got to the pass.
  • Only 100 feet from the 8,569-foot pass.
  • At the pass, we peer west and get our first view of the Eiger, the distinct pyramid-shape peak on the left.
  • The terrain on the western side of the pass leveled out quickly into grassy highlands.
  • On the west side of Sefinenfurgge, descending toward the villages of Murren and Lauterbrennen.
  • Shannon Davis hikes onward, gazing at the Eiger.
  • A little avalanche cascades down the rock wall across the valley.
  • The Via Alpina tracks through farm country as it drops from Sefinenfurgge to valley villages of Murren and Lauterbrunnen. This cow has one hell of a view.

I love these photos...too bad they aren't big enough to use as my computer's desktop.
