Got Busted Gear?

Gear editor Kristin Hostetter is working on a new book and she wants your dirty, broken gear to fix up.

by: Kristin Hostetter

Our gear editor, Kristin Hostetter, has a book project in the works. It will be an all-inclusive gear repair manual, with step-by-step photos on how to fix everything. And we mean everything—including packs, tents, boots, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, shells, base layers, fleece, puffy jackets, cookware, stoves, water treatment devices, trekking poles, outdoor electronics, and hydration systems.

What does this have to do with you? Kristin will be soliciting real, live, busted gear from our readers. We want your ripped packs, your peeling boot soles, your popped pads, your torn clothing, your sticky zippers, your snapped tent poles, whatever! She will fix it, photograph the repair process, and return it to you…for free!

To get in on this deal, here’s what you need to do:

-Send Kristin (khostetter@backpacker.com) a short, 1 paragraph email explaining your problem. Include the gear make and model, how old it is, and explain how the product came to be maimed. Include a photograph of the product and its injury. The subject line should read: “Fix My Gear!”

-Not all gear will be chosen, but Kristin will not shy away from the toughest jobs, and she will do her damndest to make the best possible repair. However, she can’t be held responsible if you’re not satisfied. (Did we mention this is a free service?) Plus, a short story about your gear and your name may appear in the book.

-You will be responsible for shipping costs (both ways) and although we promise to get it back to you as soon as possible, it could take a month or two.

So, rummage through your gear closet for your most forlorn equipment and tell Kristin about it!

how much practice have you had fixing very holey therm-a-rests?

Posted: Apr 17, 2011 Russell

Er, sorry about that, guys. I am obviously very excited about socks without holes in them.

Rad idea! Good luck with the book ... how good are you at darning socks?
Posted: Apr 13, 2011 Courtney

Not a bad idea. You could do that yourself, too, or give the fixed gear to a nearby Big City Mountaineers or other nonprofit in your area.

Why don't you fix them and give them to Porters and local staff in the Hinalaya's instead...
