How to Raise an Outdoor Kid

About The Outdoor Foundation

About The Outdoor Foundation

The Outdoor Foundation is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 whose mission is to inspire and grow future generations of outdoor enthusiasts and conservationists. Through research, outreach and national convenings, The Foundation works to connect youth with the outdoors for healthier kids, healthier communities and healthier businesses.

The Outdoor Foundation created this online resource for use by outdoor enthusiasts looking to share their passion for the outdoors with kids from their family, community or local youth program. The materials will help individuals and local, regional and national organizations add outdoor activities, such as hiking, biking, climbing, paddling, and camping to the lives of kids nationwide.

NOLS National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) Founded in 1965 by legendary mountaineer Paul Petzoldt, NOLS - a 501(c)(3) not for profit educational institution - takes people of all ages on remote wilderness expeditions, teaching technical outdoor skills, leadership, and environmental ethics in some of the world’s wildest and most awe-inspiring classrooms. What NOLS teaches cannot be learned in a classroom or on a city street. It takes practice to learn outdoor skills and time to develop leadership. The wilderness provides the ideal setting for this unique education. NOLS hands on, learn-by-doing approach means that graduates get the skills they need to be competent, responsible wilderness travelers long after their course is over.
REI

REI What began as a group of 23 mountain climbing buddies is now the nation's largest consumer cooperative with more than three million active members. But no matter how large REI grows, their roots remain firmly planted in the outdoors. Their passion for outdoor adventure is clear, whether you walk into one of our 80-plus stores, phone them, or visit the REI website. Each year, REI donates millions of dollars to support conservation efforts nationwide, and sends scores of volunteers to build trails, clean up beaches, and teach outdoor ethics to kids. Through responsible business practices, we strive to reduce our environmental footprint. REI’s commitment remains the same as when they started out in 1938: to inspire, educate and outfit for a lifetime of outdoor adventure.

Saucony Saucony Run for Good Foundation The Saucony Run for Good Program has been created to financially support community-based organizations that are fighting a tough, lonely battle to reverse the current trends towards obesity in young people. The benefits of running go far beyond strong legs and healthy hearts: research shows that running can also help kids get better grades, handle stress and diminish childhood obesity. The Saucony Run for Good grants are open to community and non-profit organizations that initiate and support running and fitness programs for kids - which in turn will help them live longer, healthier lives.
