Light and Luxe
When we gave Kayland's leather Vertigo High an Editors' Choice Award (4/07), a big part of the rationale was its great-for-most-feet fit. This lighter, next-gen model with breathable synthetic uppers remains true to pedigree, beginning with the all-important heel cup, which cradles the heel so well there's no upward rubbing on steep climbs or forward slipping on steep descents. That comfortable embrace extends through the midfoot, which has good arch support, and the roomy toebox.

Our Rockies tester praised the eVent liners, reporting that they kept his feet dry through miles of trail covered in fresh snow. "Breathability is so good my socks were perfectly dry at the end of the day," he wrote. Midsole support handles 35-pound loads. Best for medium-volume feet. $175; 2 lbs. 5 oz. Kayland.com
