Traction: The Run combines stainless steel coils (under the heel and arch) with a rubber forefoot plate embedded with six barely-there carbide steel spikes. “They let me rocket up slippery hills,” reports one ultramarathoner. “I didn’t even have to alter my stride when running on frozen trails. That confidence let me train harder.” And clumping was minimal, thanks to the snow-shedding rubber underfoot. Bonus: Replaceable spikes ($10) let you refresh the traction without investing in a whole new pair.

Comfort: “I experienced no pressure points,” says our tester, noting that the supple rubber and nylon webbing straps conform to lightweight running and hiking shoes.

Fit: A removable, V-shaped forefoot strap connects the large, molded toepiece to the instep strap for an exceptionally secure fit. The Run never slid out of place or slipped off the toe, even during sprints and climbs up steep terrain.
