Exped DownMat XP 9 M

After spending more than six weeks in Alaska and another month on glaciers throughout Greenland, testers delivered this verdict: The XP 9 is a furnace. The 700-fill down pad inflates to 3.5 inches thick, yielding an almost unheard of R-value of 8.0. Plus, it doesn’t require kid-glove handling. “When I spend weeks on end at high altitude, I don’t have the energy or time to give lightweight gear proper TLC. After six brutal weeks on Denali, this pad still looked new,” says our tester. The dual flat valves are durable and convenient: One is for inflation (fill the included Schnozzel Pumpbag with air, then compress to fill the pad), and one for quick deflation. It’s not as light as some four-season pads, but our tester still carried it 7,000 vertical feet up Denali and never once considered ditching it for a lighter pad. $249; 2 lbs. 1 oz.
