Gear Review: Mountain Hardwear Downpour Wide Brim Rain Hat

A storm shell and umbrella for your head

Rain

Like a storm shell and umbrella for your head, the Mountain Hardwear Downpour Wide Brim Rain Hat uses 2.5-layer Epic fabric (the same material used in some Mountain Hardwear rain jackets). “After hours of showers in Colorado’s Sarvis Creek Wilderness, the fabric never wetted through,” says our tester, adding that the sturdy, three-inch-wide brim provides so much shelter, “it’s like walking beneath a mini-umbrella.” It even stays put through gusts of wind, thanks to a chinstrap and a Velcro buckle inside the crown that tightens or loosens the fit for various noggin sizes. $40; 3 oz.; mountainhardwear.com
