Gear Review: Fjällräven Skare Softshell

A 93-percent nylon, double-woven cap that is extremely lightweight and low profile.

If you’ve ever been caught in unexpected rain, a sudden chill, or a sun-baked snow bowl with no head and face protection—and who hasn’t?—consider the Skare. This 93-percent nylon, double-woven cap is extremely lightweight and low profile, and features tuckaway earflaps and a small brim.

Our tester wore it on a six-day ski tour of Iceland, and was surprised by the versatile performance. “At first I was dubious about the Scandinavian Elmer Fudd look,” he says. “But it cut wind dead, protected my ears, and the cinch cord let me fine-tune the snug fit, so it traps heat well even though it’s not insulated.” Another staffer declares it the “perfect fishing hat.”
