Rugged Ultralight
This midcut mountain boot is actually lighter than some midweights–but it proved a solid all-around performer. The rigid midsole “gave great support when descending loose, sandy shale, and easily handled heavy loads in off-trail terrain,” said our tester after a long, crumbly scramble in Rocky Mountain National Park. Yet it’s as comfortable as a sturdy dayhiking boot on trail.

Credit goes to the light, flexible, suede-synthetic uppers, an aggressive outsole rocker, and to-the-toes lacing that allows micro-adjustments of fit. A Gore-Tex membrane kept out wet stuff, yet the boot wasn’t as hot as many competitive models. Best for medium-volume, slightly wide feet with a narrow heel. $265; 2 lbs. 13 oz.
