My friends are getting married in a month and I want to give them a piece of gear specifically for couples. I looked into couples sleeping bags, my first choice, but I can’t spend more than $200. Can you suggest something thoughtful and high quality?Submitted by - Stacy, Great Falls, VA
Dear Stacy, I’ve got a few good options for you. Be warned, though: double bags tend to be heavy and bulky. If your friends are backpackers you could always just buy them two lightweight mummies that have compatible left/right zippers. It’s not as, um, user-friendly as a double-wide love nest, but newlyweds will always find a way.
The A-Lite Sexy Hotness bags are specifically designed for marital bliss, with strategically placed “access zippers.” At $149 a pop, two of them exceed your price range, but you could always join forces (and wallets) with another wedding-goer. I just sent a couple of these bags to a newlywed tester; look for an online review in the coming months.
This third option isn’t due to hit stores until this July, but it looks pretty sweet. It’s called the Therm-a-rest Down Coupler and it retails for $100-$130, depending on the size. It’s basically a down featherbed that you use to join two rectangular sleeping pads (such as Therm-a-rest ones), resulting in a cozy, unified platform for sleeping, spooning, or consumating.
Top it off with a pair of these Tech Blankets from Thermarest, which cost $50 apiece and you’ve given your friends the ultimate marital bed (for summer only, as the Tech Blanket is pretty thin). Note: they can always upgrade with all that wedding cash to the thicker, warmer Ventra down comforter, about $200 each. —Kristin
