Answer:

I consulted with several experts to find the best solution here. (We all give you a standing ovation for trying to keep your old bag out of the dump!) I couldn’t find any recycling facilities that will accept bags. (Caveat: The company Golite will currently take back any of their bags and store them until recycling options become available. My guess is that other green-minded companies might do the same.) But there’s an even better options that recycling: repurposing. The best thing you can do for the environment is to keep it in circulation. You have several options:

[] Donate it! Animal shelters and homeless shelters are always looking for bedding material.

[] Gift a scout. Local scout troops are always more than happy to accept any and all used camping gear.

[] Google it. Plug in “donate sleeping bag” and you’ll get 172,000 (and counting) hits. People definitely want your old—but cozy—pile of fluff!

For Poly fill bags, wash and remove the cover. Then give the stuffing to a quilting club. They use it between the top and bottom layers of a quilt. The remaining nylon you can sew several replacement compression sacks out of. Melt the cut edge with a lighter so it doesn’t fray
