Cures on High

What multivitamin/herbal remedy you suggest for overcoming altitude sickness?

Question:

We’re going to Peru. What multivitamin/herbal remedy you suggest for overcoming altitude sickness?

Answer:

Only ginkgo biloba has proven in tests to reduce the incidence and severity of Acute Mountain Sickness. Peter Hackett, MD, the guru of high mountain medicine, recommends 80 mg twice a day, but some others suggest 120 mg twice a day–morning and evening, starting 4-5 days before going high. Nothing else herbal or vitamin-wise has shown measurable results–but taking extra doses of vitamin C and the vitamin B is not contraindicated. And have fun. I love Peru.

I live at sea level and was hunting at 9-10k feet when I got hammered by altitude sickness. My dad pulled out a large bottle of Rolaids and told me to eat 3-4 right then and continue eating 1-2 every 1/2 hr or when I felt the headaches and such returning. Worked like a champ. After a couple days of acclimation I didn’t need them anymore. I have used them many times since and they always work for me.
