Gear Review: Snow Peak Hozuk

A soft shell lantern that's perfect for illuminating a tent.

Setting the mood?

You can’t do better than this lantern, which casts a wide arc of the warmest, softest golden light of any LED we’ve tested. The secret: A silicone globe, which smooths the LEDs’ output into a shadow-free glow on each of the six settings (three each for solid and flickering candle modes).

Hang it in a tent or flip it over and set it on a rock for “white-tablecloth-restaurant ambiance,” says one tester.

So what keeps it from being the best lantern ever? Weight and price. Plus, the rubber guard that’s supposed to protect the mini USB slot (for running on external power, but not recharging batteries) doesn’t stay put.
