Gear Review: Mammut X-Shot

The brightest headlamp we tested.

For dark-of-night pursuits, the X-Shot outperformed every other light we tested. After an alpine start on Colorado’s 14,259-foot Longs Peak, one tester said, “My partners could turn off their lamps and hike in my beam, and it wasn’t even on high.” Three LEDs provide up to 200 lumens of shadow-free, white light that blasts farther than a football field (on high), and three AA batteries power the high beam for 12 hours (the longest in this test).

Likes: It’s easy to operate with gloves on, and a snap-on lantern casing (sold separately, $12, 1.7 oz.) diffuses ambient light.

Dislikes: The strap is difficult to adjust, and stability is below average due to a large rear battery pack and thin strap.
