Why do I get headaches nearing the end of hikes? I drink enough water, eat enough, but the last two miles of so of any hike I get a killer headache.

Answer:

There is a list of reasons for a headache as long as your trekking pole. Here is a short list: muscle fatigue in your shoulders from carrying a pack, hyponatremia, psychological/emotional stress, cerebral edema, brain tumor, caffeine overload, caffeine underload, and alcohol withdrawal (and, yes, dehydration and malnutrition). I, unfortunately, have absolutely no idea why your headache only comes on near the end of a hike. If it really is "killer," I suggest a visit to your favorite local doc.
