Boot Review: La Sportiva Trango Trek

The Trek brings serious trail mileage capabilities to the original (and winning) Trango S.

After the Trango S earned an Editors' Choice Award (4/04) for its standout performance in technical mountain terrain, we thought it high time to check out this version-a Trango for the trail. The leather/fabric model lifts several attributes of the Trango S-like wick-dry lining, great traction, and a lightweight upper-but combines them with high-mileage trail features like a stretch nylon tongue and gussets, cushioned midsole, and roomy forefoot. Our tester reports: "A snug heel pocket and ankle stretch panels keep heels blister-free on steep uphills, and the widely spaced lacing system lets you tailor the forefoot volume to taste." The price is high for a nonwaterproof boot, but fit is forgiving for a variety of feet. $195
