Love the Rambo look? Then by all means, keep your old, baggy hiking pants. For the rest of us, style salvation comes in the form of these sleek, simple trousers with the “cleanest waistband” our gear editor has ever seen—and the technical chops to withstand long days on the trail. The stretchy, wicking nylon and elastane fabric is a bit stiffer than one Colorado tester was used to, but the material won her over with its excellent protection from both wind and thorns. “On a hike in the Rockies, the pants weathered temperatures in the teens, overly friendly dogs, and plenty of mud with grace,” she reports. Two zipperless hip pockets discreetly hold small items like lip balm, while a cinch-cord in the cuffs (the small toggle is hidden inside the leg) kept our tester’s pants from getting tangled in her bike chain. Bummer: “As a somewhat tall woman (5’9”), the legs are a little shorter than I prefer,” our Rockies tester says. $100; 11.2 oz.; 28”-36” waist; hellyhansen.com
