Toughest Gear: Arc'teryx Bora Backpack
by: BACKPACKER Editors
Davis with the Arc'teryx Bora (Genny Fullerton)
We’ve probably awarded more perfect 5’s for pack durability to Arc’teryx than to any other brand. But don’t just take our word for it: Our readers perennially name the Bora one of their favorites. Available in five sizes, this line doesn’t skimp on fabric quality in places where other packs cut corners—like the mesh lining over the foam in your shoulder straps. The result: You’ll never feel like you have to baby the Bora, or worry that the comfort will come to an end. $199-$435;

I guess I'm lucky that my Bora 95 did break so that I could justify buying a new pack. The outside of the pack looks just like it did when the pack was new 4 years ago, but the fabric between the kangaroo-pocket and the main compartment has frayed and torn away at the seams. Access from the kangaroo pocket to the main compartment might not be a bad idea, but not in this fashion.
Bought the Naos 85 instead, and the transfer load disc makes it much more comfortable to carry than the Bora. It is also slightly smaller, without any daisy chains to strap on gear, so I have to pack smarter and lighter. And no gear on the outside of the pack makes it easier to get through the bush without any snagging. Me happy :D
I love my Bora 80!!!
I have a Bora 90 that I got in 2000. I want a newer, lighter pack, but I'm in the same boat, and can't justify buying a new pack, since my Bora is still working perfect. The only thing is I would like some of the more modern features that are out now, like the coated zippers to keep water out, lighter, stronger fabrics, stuff like that. I am very hard on gear, and this thing will not give in. I do search and rescue, and we have gone out in some very unforgiving terrain and go through brush that most think is impassable. I've seen just about every other pack get messed up, one way or another but mine still looks great! I also have a lil Bora 30 that I got in 1999 that I finally found a small small hole in the main compartment. Just wish Arc'Teryx still made a smaller Bora.
I've had my Bora for over a decade and I still struggle justifying it's replacement. My only complaint is that the materials used then, are much heavier than those today, making for a substantial pack. The thing is bombproof though.
I love new gear and almost regret buying a Bora pack because it refuses to wear out. I cannot justify buying a new pack when my Bora looks like the day I bought it, though it is a decade old.
The Bora 80 is definitely a great pack and virtually bomb proof. Every year when I venture into the Wind Rivers or the Tetons the Bora always provides maximum comfort. Thank you Arcteryx!
